9.29.09 The Anaheim Ducks season almost begins

The Anaheim Ducks season begins on Saturday at the Honda Center when they face their Northern California rivals The San Jose Sharks. This photo of Teemue Selanne, Saku Koivu and Brendan Mikkelson was taken during warm-ups in a preseason game against the the Sharks at The Honda Center. Let's hope Saturday has the same winning results in store for our Ducks.

9.29.09 Disneyland's Halloween Time Fireworks

Disneyland's Halloween Time started last Friday and they have done more decorating and have more spooktacular shows and attractions than ever! 

For the first time Space Mountain has become Ghost Galaxy and they have a Halloween fireworks show--Halloween Screams: A Villainous Surprise in the Skies. The ghoulish fun ends Nov. 1st to make way for the holidays, so make your plans to get down there soon.

9.27.09 Near Central Park

Basically in a natural condition.

This is a field near Central Park in Huntington Beach.
It's right next to a horse stabling place, so it's not unusual
to see horses and even buggies being ridden here.
The sign leading into this place says:

WARNING
All users of this area do so at their own risk
This area is neither patrolled nor supervised
This is neither an improved trail system nor a park site
This area is basically in a natural condition

One of the few bits of land in Huntington Beach that is unused.

9.25.09 : Huntington Beach / pier performers

"Welcome to theater on the ground and in the round..."

Spinning, dancing and sweating are all part of these street entertainer's routine as they perform for tourists and locals on the Huntington Beach pier. They receive applause and cheers from the crowd after each amazing physical trick. Next they pass a bucket to the audience, and when it returns full of donations they smile and start all over again.

9.24.09 Bob's Big Boy returns to Orange County

Bob's Big Boy returned to Orange County a few months ago in Orange. Native Orange County folk remember his silver goblet shakes, chili spaghetti and signature hamburgers from the '70s and '80s and welcome his return.

Sunset at the OC Great Park. The park grounds are covered with boxed trees that will eventually be planted in the park. Growing the trees here instead of in a nursery "helps reduce the heat island effect." The OC Great Park Preview Park recently won a Design Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects.

9.20.09 Tsunami Hazard Zone

Get to high ground!

It's weird, living right next to a tsunami hazard zone. Fortunately we live just outside the hazardous area, but I see these signs all the time.

9.18.09 : Dairy Treat or Fikes. Tough decision.

 

I was taking a photo of The Dairy Treat (located just off the Orange Plaza), when this iconic 'low rider' crossed my lens. In 1959 my mother attended 6th grade just up the street, and she tells me she ate lunch (which might have been just a soft serve ice cream) at the Dairy Treat often. Although it was a tough decision since Fikes Place, which was also very near the school, offered a "52 Special" (52cents for a hamburger, fries and soda). She said Fikes was thier version of Arnold's and became a hang out for all local kids. Sadly Fikes is long gone but happily Dairy Treat remains. Next time you are near by, stop in for a dipped cone and a terriaki special.

9.16.09 D23 Expo

The first ever D23 Expo was held at the Anaheim Conventions center for four days.  Disney fans gathered to hear first hand from Imagineers, Disney executives and even Darth Vader what's new from the wonderful wold of Disney.

The Mad Hatter hosted his very own tea party on the convention floor to promote Tim Burton's new flick "Alice in Wonderland."
