The Catch has been an Anaheim mainstay for quite a number of years....and when I first moved into the neighborhood, I looked forward to becoming a regular there.
Alas, the A-Town development project dislocated this establishment shortly after I moved in - but it's about to re-open right across the street from my Stadium Lofts location.... can't wait.....
I'd never been inside the Grand Californian Hotel until this weekend, and I stood in awe for several minutes when I saw the beautiful Christmas tree- all decorated and lit up and nearly touching the high ceiling. The carolers were taking requests; as I took this picture, they were singing "Jingle Bell Rock."
There is an old school batting cage place in Anaheim on Beach Blvd. that seems to have been there a million years. I mean I remember coming here on a very bad date as a teenager. So yes, it must be a MILLION years old then. There are so many things I love about this place: the snack shack that sells authentic Icee drinks, the encouraging words painted on the walls and the insanely vintage automated pitching equipment. Here is 20 secs for you to enjoy...
I was part of the opening crew at Ruby's in Crystal Court and I remember when they first put up this giant Santa. It is surrounded by small cottages, woodland creatures and circled day and night by a toy train. We go by every year to see it...and of course have to stop by Ruby's for a Vanilla Coke and chili fries.
I know this looks like a double exposure, but it's not. It's a mannequin in a shop window in downtown Santa Ana, CA. The trees are a reflection in the window, and the white star is painted on the glass.
Taken with a Brownie Hawkeye Flash with a flipped lens (which causes the blurring around the sides of the frame) on expired film that's over 30 years old.
Visiting this mission as a child growing up in Orange County was de rigueur for nearly all 4th graders in the public school system. We would hop off the bus, marvel at the size of the buildings and listen to a docent try to explain to us what life was like many lifetimes ago when California was being settled. Honestly, it was too much for our little 4th grade minds to comprehend. More than likely we were just thinking about who we were gonna sit by on the bus ride home or what we had packed in our sack lunch. So it was a recent visit as an adult that really helped me appreciate the significance and beauty of this landmark.
It is perfectly splendid, and splendidly unperfect.
I love the lifeguard towers in Huntington Beach. They have hold so much nostalgia for me. On this stormy day, the beach looked peaceful and orderly. Orange County beaches in the off-season are just as inviting as when the summer is in full swing.
