10.13.10 Balboa Village Market torn down

The Balboa Village Market was torn down yesterday to make room for a parking lot. Set in the middle of one of my favorite places in Orange County--The Balboa Peninsula --it was a beautiful old building with these great murals on the side and back.  

So sad.  It reminds me of when they leveled The Golden Bear back in 1986.  I hate to see these pieces of our history go away for parking lots, chain restaurants and condos. It's just so shortsighted. I'm glad  at least have these photos.

I've been haunting the Balboa Island neighborhoods the past few weeks on a photo assignment, and have had to apply my urban survival skills versus the apparent infestation of Yorkshire Terriers. Note that there's none seen surviving in this image...

It was sitting there. Alone and not locked up. All lime green and polka dotted against the shelter of the mid-century designed post office.

I will admit it. I waited around a bit to see who it belonged too. 

They never came.

But I am sure it was someone just as cool as this bike.

Follow it with a walk around Balboa Island.

The piers of Orange County are full of fishermen (or in this case fisher-boys) day and night. In many cases it is a family event, with everyone maning their own rod. Sadly, these fishing trips seem more of an economical necessity than for entertainment. After the father of these little boys caught a fish on his own rod- they yelled with excitement "Pescado Noche!" (or 'Fish Tonight!') celebrating their dinner catch.

Taken at a beach side bungee jump.

It was his 8th birthday and all he wanted was to 'fly'. The man who ran the attraction pulled down and let go, and off he went soaring into the clouds. Laughing and yelling all the way up. He was in heaven. Literally.

Only later did I discover the plane that joined him in the frame.

Sometimes real life can do it better than Photoshop.
